German Silver vs 925 Silver: What’s the Difference?
Share
If you’ve ever searched for silver jewellery online, you have probably come across the term German silver.
It sounds like silver, looks like silver and is often sold as silver jewellery.
But there is an important difference you should know before buying.
What is German silver?
Despite its name, German silver generally does not contain silver.
It is usually a metal alloy made from materials such as copper, nickel and zinc. It gets its name from its silvery appearance, not because it is made from the precious metal silver.
It can be a good option for affordable fashion jewellery, but it should not be confused with genuine silver.
What is 925 silver?
925 silver, also called sterling silver, is genuine silver.
The number 925 refers to its composition: 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining percentage made up of other metals that help give the jewellery the strength needed for everyday use.
This is the silver we use at Silver Threads.
For us, the material matters just as much as the design.
So, how are they different?
The easiest way to remember it is:
German silver = silver coloured metal
925 silver = genuine silver
They may look similar when you first see them, but they are very different materials.
925 silver is a precious metal and has an inherent silver value. German silver generally does not have the same precious-metal value because it does not contain silver.
What about tarnishing?
This is where there is often some confusion.
Genuine silver can tarnish too.
Over time, 925 silver can naturally darken when it reacts with substances in the environment. This is a normal characteristic of silver and doesn’t mean that your jewellery isn’t genuine.
With proper storage and cleaning, your silver jewellery can be brought back to its shine.
What should you look for when buying silver jewellery?
Before purchasing, don’t just look at the colour of the jewellery.
Look for information about the metal composition.
If you’re buying genuine 925 silver jewellery, the product description should clearly state that it is made from 92.5% silver. You may also see a 925 marking on the piece, depending on the product.
At Silver Threads, we believe customers deserve to know exactly what they are purchasing.
That’s why we clearly state our use of 92.5 silver across our jewellery.
Because when you’re investing in a piece you’ll wear and keep, knowing the difference matters.
